Thanksgiving. It's complex. Peter backs away slowly from the intensity of Bobby and Kitty's eyes when the topic is discussed. Happily, John shares in his confusion-- ( it's just a meal, he bitches. )
John says, decisively, "I think looking after someone will focus Stark. Give him a cause... someone to be strong for. He's better at control than Banner--especially now, after the alcohol. He's usually the prodigal, the disappointment, but now for him he's the example, the... inspiration. The support. He might--become--the stable success story that Banner sees him as. That Banner idolizes ( him as. )
Everyone tells Peter he's so responsible, so good, so blah blah blah. He knows that's how they see all his actions. No one thinks he even could be vicious.
( Peter knows just how petty he really is. )

21.3.2. Time is running out
By the time they arrive in Egypt they are both tired. To Peter's surprise, Lensherr is waiting for them as the disembark. John doesn't act surprised, but then he usually doesn't. Peter imagines he must always project an appearance of expecting and supporting his mentor's actions. A military thing, too.
( Lensherr seems extremely nervous to Peter's admittedly untrained eye. )

9.1.2 JMM “There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart's desire. The other is to get it.” - George Bernard Shaw
Peter's life has been normal for a long time, excepting his participation with the X-men. He rarely becomes emotional, and likes to follow a routine. He supposes that he puts his strong emotions into his paintings instead of screaming at people (Jubilee), writing angry, passive-agressive emails (Bobby), or immobilizing an offender while shouting (Kitty.) St John usually does nothing at all--which scares people half to death as they try to imagine what retribution he's planning on. ( Only John could make doing nothing terrifying. )

So anyway I see Peter as a mix of:
the Guide/ Sage/ introspective counselor
the Judge (beyond politics/religion/pettiness)
the Romantic creator/artist
the Sacred Messenger (delivering unvarnished Truth to both sides)
I see Kitty as the Empress and the Mediator, Bobby as the Star, St. John as the Adventurer/the Chariot/Wanderer/the Avenger/ the Mystic, Jean-Paul as the Hedonist/Liberator, Doug as the Alchemist/Visionary/Engineer, Illyana as the Prophetess and Elder, Jeanne-Marie as the Healer, Aurora as the Cynic/Diogenes/ Companion, Sally as the puella eternus/eternal child, and ( Emma as the Hierophant )

John looks upset at his words. He stands up, now able to look down at Peter by just a little, and says, "This is a clear emergency. You need to hear something, you're about illiterate. Let's wag. What do you say, New York?"
He asks when, and John looks impatient and says "Now!" Peter says ok, excited to be asked out on his first school skipping adventure. ( They bustle off out the window to John's car. )

"I stood still, vision blurring, and in that moment, I heard my heart break. It was a small, clean sound, like the snapping of a flower's stem."
— Diana Gabaldon (19 April prompt #3)
Peter loved shocking the hell out of him with his little observations. Now John's gone? What? What does that even mean, he'll just never see him again? He didn't say bye. Peter keeps thinking, firmly, We're just friends, causal ones, or strange opposites attract ones. Or non-communicative ones.
So what. He's just my causal friend.
( Peter's starting to think he's not. )

charloft; Thursday, what disturbs you
Peter knows that St. John and Bobby are trying not to repeat history and he rarely worries about it. They would probably be at odds over an assassination, or some political initiative that is being killed in committees, or some criticism of the other's side. Then they would agree to disagree.
( Peter didn't expect their loudest row would be about him. )

What to do in NOLA?? make notes; do not check weather
Where is my copy of Dr Zhivago???
John: no trying to kill children in the mansion. I thought you were doing quite well with anger management class--wait a moment and do it outside on the lawn.

15.5.2. Go to a party
"What'd you get Illyana?" Bobby asks him. "Oh, a book on summoning demons," St. John says, and Bobby does a double take, and laughs. He smoothes it out, and comes back at him with, "Well, good thing I got her the kit that goes with it."
St. John tips his head in appreciation, and says, "Great minds." They clink coke bottles. He actually got her some books on religion in ancient Egypt, on the cult of Mithras, and on the Eleusian mysteries. Peter overhears them. He's not surprised John goes on to emphatically state:
( if she's going to be a new age witch I'll be damned if she won't be the best educated one in history. )

Philosophy 101: "The goal is to live with godlike composure on the full rush of energy, like Dionysus riding the leopard without being torn to pieces." - Joseph Campbell
( To say St. John is enamoured of Ancient Greece is an understatement. Peter enjoys it when their interests coincide, and ends up learning far more than he thought possible about Eleusian mysteries and pagan customs. It of course helps to inform his interpretations of many, many paintings, reliefs (rilievi? Must ask Doug), and sculpture. Peter enjoys the Stoics, the Epicureans--but draws the line at the Pre-Socratics. John's devotion to Heraclitus knows no bounds. He quotes him in casual conversation and hands out copies of his work. Or rather, the fragments of it, that's all that's left--and Peter wishes he didn't know that much about it. )

14.1.6 “When love is not madness, it is not love.” - Jacques Prévert
( For every complaint Peter overhears about his non-participation in the X-men, his avoidance of social affairs, and his thing with John, he becomes more entrenched in his belief that he's right. He was right to leave the team, he is smart to avoid socializing, and he is definitely two hundred percent behind his unique and unlikely relationship with St. John. )

( In general, Peter knows he's reliable, calm, nice. But when it comes to St. John all those qualities get pushed to the side; not totally off the map, he just... refocuses. He becomes a little bit more of himself and a little less of what people expect him to be. )

Happy Birthday John. :D
Try to fit me in on your big day, but if not it is your 'birthday week', isn't it? So whenever. I even have a present for you, and it's edible. Now you will feel it necessary to come get it straightaway, haha.
I can't wait to see the look on your face when you see it's a Pavlova cake, your favorite! It will be worth all the time I had to spend with Aurora, as she grilled me about our relationship. I will consider carefully before I ask her another favor. ... I think Jean-Paul would have talked less!
